Finasteride is used to slow down and help prevent male pattern baldness associated with Dihydrotestosterone. Bodybuilders through their use of Testosterone usually encounter side effects such as body hair growth, acne, enlarged prostate and triggering male pattern baldness. This is due to the Testosterone converting into Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which is a several times stronger male androgen. The 5-Alpha Reductase (5AR) enzyme plays a role in the reduction of Testosterone into DHT and the 5AR enzyme is mostly found in the scalp, skin and prostate. So when a bodybuilder injects Testosterone and it flows through the body, the 5AR will bind to some testosterone and reduce it to DHT, and as the higher concentration of 5AR is in the prostate, scalp and skin, this is why side effects of Testosterone is acne / oily skin, male pattern baldness and an enlarged prostate to name a few.
Finasteride works to inhibit the 5AR and only work to prevent the conversion of testosterone into DHT and is used mostly with athletes who are using high does of Testosterone. As such Finasteride will do nothing to halt any androgenic effects of steroids such as Deca Durabolin, Oxandrolone, Stanozolol, Drostanolone or Trenbolone to name a few. Finasteride binds to the 5AR enzyme and inhibits its ability to convert or reduce Testosterone into DHT in simple terms. Finasteride is highly effective in reducing DHT serum by 50-60% in a 24 hour period after taking a single 1 mg dose. However it is not going to achieve 100% effectiveness. At the same time as reducing the negative effects of Testosterone it stands to reason that it increases the amount of Testosterone in the blood system as it inhibits Testosterone from being converted to DHT. While it does not boost or increase the level, it allows more of the Testosterone to be used in the body and effectively increasing the testosterone levels in the blood by up to 10 or 15%.
Finasteride was created and certified to treat Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH) which is the enlargement of the Prostate Gland and was further certified for use in treatment of male pattern baldness. Proscar or Finasteride is identical to Propecia (which is marketed for Male Pattern Baldness) however Propecia contains only a 20% of the full power of Proscar. Finasteride will not reverse male pattern baldness once it has begun so it is best to use it prior to MPB starting. Negative effects of Finasteride are limited, some report a lessening of the sex drive, while 1% or less report ejaculation issues and strange body rashes. It does not affect any other hormone such as cortisol, thyroid, luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) or cholesterol even.
Most men report taking 1 mg of finasteride daily for six months up to a year. For treating BPH up to 5 mg a day are prescribed by medical professionals so it is important to see your doctor about these questions. Most Bodybuilders report taking1 mg a day when high dose of Testosterone are used.
